Year 4 at St. Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Billingham had an incredible day at Teesmouth Field Centre, deepening their learning on their Geography topic: Coasts. This hands‑on experience helped bring classroom learning to life in the most exciting way.

Throughout the visit, the children explored key geographical skills, including:

  • How to use a compass accurately
  • How to read map keys
  • Understanding and using grid references
  • Applying map skills in a real coastal environment

The beach became their outdoor classroom as they put their new knowledge into practice. Surrounded by the natural landscape, the children were able to see coastal features up close, making the learning both memorable and meaningful.

Of course, the day wasn’t all study - there was plenty of fun too! Year 4 enjoyed building sandcastles, creating seawalls to protect them and designing and testing their own sea defences.

Through teamwork, problem‑solving and creativity, the pupils gained a deeper understanding of how coastlines change and how people work to protect them.

This brilliant trip not only supported the curriculum but also helped develop confidence, resilience and curiosity. A huge well done to Year 4 for their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour throughout the day!
