Welcome to Year 5

Class Teachers: Miss Wilberforce & Mr Hayler

Teaching Assistant: Ms Ronan

Miss Wilberforce and Mr Hayler are the class teachers in Year 5. We are supported by Ms Ronan, our teaching assistant.

In Year 5 we are enthusiastic, helpful and hardworking learners who support each other to demonstrate the determination to become the best we can be! We strive to be resilient learners who can recognise when things are tricky but continue to persevere. We always try to support each other, showing compassion to others and recognising our differences. We have a safe and nurturing classroom environment, where every child has their thoughts and opinions valued. As a result, our classroom is a pleasant place to learn where we develop good relationships and grow together.

As we move further up the school it is important that we are excellent role models for younger children and become more independent learners. We therefore look forward to taking on extra responsibilities such as being effective School and Sports Council members and Minnie Vinnies. We also take on more responsibility with home learning, ensuring that homework is completed and time is spent on times table rockstars, spelling shed and reading plus regularly.

In Year 5 approach all aspects of the curriculum with enthusiasm. We have exciting and engaging history and geography units to learn about such as Ancient Maya, North America and The Home Front! We link art, design technology and other practical activities to these units to make the subjects really come to life. We are incredibly lucky to have specialist French and music teachers to further enrich our curriculum. Each week Class 5 also take part in a forest school session. Practical, outdoor activities help further develop our team work and co-operation skills. We are extremely passionate about reading and believe it is the key to learning. We love to read for pleasure and we are always eager to share book recommendations with each other through our regular ‘book talk’ sessions.

Our outstanding behaviour, work and effort is recognised in various ways. We create a positive learning environment by encouraging and supporting each other to be placed our recognition board every week. A ‘Star of the Week’ certificate is presented on a weekly basis to celebrate the fantastic work, efforts and attitudes we have in Year 5. Our teachers are always looking out for great hand writers too for our weekly ‘Handwriting award’!

We have a very busy timetable. Please view our current Newsletter for further Curriculum information
